Sustainable Energy Transformation at Conestoga College
Blackstone designed and installed a five-interconnected rooftop solar PV system to assist Conestoga College in meeting their energy demands and reducing GHG emissions on campus. Coupled with our blackPAC™ Energy Management Solution, Conestoga reduces grid consumption during peak, environmentally challenging periods when electricity is both expensive and relies on natural gas-based generation. This project brings the school closer to achieving its 80% carbon reduction goal by 2050.
- Over 3,000 solar PV panels installed on unused rooftop area.
- Generates 1.6 GWh of renewable, clean energy annually.
- Helps Conestoga meet 15% of their annual demand and shave peak demand by 57%.
- 91.56 tCO2e carbon emissions reduction per year, this is equivalent of taking 27 gas-powered cars off the road annually.

Net-Zero In Action: Conestoga College
Blackstone designed and installed a half-megawatt solar field and a 250-ton geothermal heat pump at Conestoga’s Cambridge campus.
- Generates 800 MWh of energy annually
- Replaces gas boilers, chillers and cooling towers
- More than 5000m3 of natural gas saved since construction
- Helps Conestoga achieve its vision of reducing its 2015 emissions by 80% by 2050
- Improved brand awareness and recognition as a progressive community leader

Energy Optimization for Savings: St. Mary’s General Hospital
St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener had big plans for energy conservation. Blackstone’s solutions included important recommissioning/ optimization of existing systems along with energy efficiency equipment upgrades to help the hospital reap significant savings.
- Conducted an ASHRAE Level 3 audit for 300,000 ft2
- Developed 7 Energy Conservation Measures and 3 Facility Improvement Measures
- Implemented a facility-wide LED lighting retrofit and installed new domestic water booster pumps
- Upgraded the existing softener and brine system
- Optimized chilling with 400hp VSD motor and cooling tower control
- Integrated a BlackPAC energy information and analytics system – an automated M&V platform
